CHAPTER FOURTEEN

TWO DAYS AGO, on the back porch of the Blackwell farmhouse, Grady hadn’t been honest with Adele. The truth was Grady disliked surprises. He’d disliked them his entire life. From the moment his parents had surprised him with the announcement of their divorce.

Only now it wasn’t dislike he felt for Adele. Far from it.

Regrettably, the surprises surrounding Adele kept on coming. Like, he hadn’t seen her at all yesterday. Not even a glimpse of her truck on the road. That should’ve suited him fine. Instead, surprise, he’d missed her. Even more surprising, he went to sleep thinking about her and woke up with her still on his mind. Where she lingered through breakfast and continued even as the lunch hour approached.

His cell phone rang. Grady answered, setting the phone over his car speakers and setting thoughts of Adele firmly aside. He had a job to do, after all. “What’s up, Deputy Tate?”

Kirby offered a cheerful greeting and then, “Sheriff, we have a call about trespassers on Conrad Ford’s property from the neighbors, Paul and Flo Haynes. Paul told me to tell you that it’s not right. Not right at all. This used to be a quiet, predictable town. Paul expects you to bring that back or you aren’t getting his vote for another term.”

Grady wasn’t concerned about the man’s vote. “It still is a quiet, predictable town, Deputy Tate.” The only unpredictable part about the place was a certain widow.

“Well, I can tell you it isn’t trespassers on Conrad’s property, that’s for sure,” Kirby said, her voice confident.

Grady stared at the dashboard. A pinch of anticipation worked into his words. “Who is it?”

“It’s Adele and the twins.” Kirby’s chuckle streamed over the speaker.

He hoped so. He pressed pause on his unwarranted excitement. “How do you know that?”

“Haven’t you ever heard Ivy and Quinn squeal?” Kirby chuckled again. “The twins have more range in their squeals than the pipe organ at the cathedral in Cody. I heard them when Paul was ranting about predictability and keeping things quiet.”

Grady shook his head. He really shouldn’t be surprised the call was related to Adele. He was only surprised it’d taken so long for him to get one about her. “Get me Conrad Ford on the phone.”

“That’ll be hard to do,” Kirby said. “Conrad doesn’t own a cell phone, and I saw his truck heading out of town on my way in this morning. He was traveling north toward the mountains.”

That was the direction of Ford’s hunting camp—the one Conrad kept inviting Grady to stay at for a spell. Then Conrad would always follow his invitation with A man can clear his head up in the mountains, Sheriff. Set himself back to rights. Too much noise in these parts to do that round here.

Conrad’s camp was a four-hour drive away, and trips to his mountain cabin often lasted more than one night. Grady ran his palms over his face. “And Conrad is the only person who can prove Adele is not trespassing on his property.
